Public School punishments could be cruel, quirky and sometimes oddly humorous. Every master and mistress had their speciality, their accoutrements and machines. They had pet names for them: “The Horny Hand”, “L’il Bessy” and “Suppose”. Suppose had latent intent, frisson, the thrill of the unknown. It worked almost before anything had happened, just suppose.
